New and Innovative Talc Grade Determination Method with LECO’s TGA801

When hearing the word “talc,” many people tend to associate the mineral with baby powder. But talc has a plethora of uses and applications that many overlook. Talc is best described as a clay mineral that is composed of magnesium, silicon, oxygen, and hydrogen—often referred to as hydrous magnesium silicate. It’s recognized for its soft texture and water absorbing properties, making it useful in a variety of industries including ceramics, rubber, roofing materials, plastics, paints and coatings, pulp and paper, and more.

The talc market has seen steady growth in the past year and is expected to continue to grow strongly in the future. Due to this challenging mineralogical composition, determining talc grade is a difficult task. The usual loss-on-ignition (LOI) technique to determine the grade proved to be insufficient when applied. A combination of loss-on-ignition (LOI), XRF analysis, and determination of Carbon and Sulfur by combustion was attempted in conjunction instead. A calculation was done based on these three modes of analysis in order to accurately determine the talc grade, but the whole process was fairly time-consuming, and still didn’t yield the results that were sought. There was a strong need for a new method to make analysis easier, quicker, and more effective. Thanks to LECO’s TGA801, one was developed.

TGA801 Thermogravimetric AnalyzerWhen using the TGA, the LOI was able to be determined at multiple temperatures and mass change documented throughout the whole process. Samples were analyzed regarding their LOI at 3 points: 110°C, 750°C, and 1000°C. The difference in mass loss of the second and third step correlated with the talc grade. This method has been successfully implemented at the mines in Gemerská Poloma, as these analyses can be run by shift technicians on site, with results available within the parameters of the shift. These kinds of fast and accurate results are exactly what producers need as the talc market continues to grow around the globe.
